On May 10, 1930, God gave the gift of a precious baby girl to Alice “Ms Rennie” Featherston and Willie Henry. They named this little bundle of joy, Emma Jean after her great grandmother. She was nurtured as a young girl in the love of God, the love of family, to work hard and give every task your best effort.
Emma Jean confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Union Hill Baptist Church where she remained an active member until she married in 1950 and joined Antioch Baptist Church (later known as Unity) with her husband.
The Boyd Hill Schools where Emma Jean grew up only went to the sixth grade. She loved school and learning and was a good student. After she graduated sixth grade in 1942, her mother made arrangements for her to catch the Greyhound bus every Sunday evening to Texarkana where she would room with some cousins to finish high school. She would come back home by Greyhound each Friday. She had to pack and carry her food for the week with her but her groceries kept running out before Friday, so after the first year she stopped going.
She married Givens Jackson May 10, 1950. Together, they created a loving home where family was always welcomed.
They were together for forty-four years until God called her husband home February 19, 1994.
The children entrusted to their care were Willie, Barbara, Evelyn, John, Givens Jr., Anthony and grandson, Ryan.
She joined Antioch (Unity) in 1950 and remained an active member until the church closed in 2021. During her 70 years at Unity, she was active in Sunday School and in Mission. She sang in the choir, served as an Usher, as Kitchen Committee Chairperson, and as Church Clerk.
During covid she started calling in to the Cedar Grove Church services and united with Cedar Grove in 2023. While she was not able to physically attend, she had joyful anticipation for Wednesday and Sunday services on the phone. She could be heard loudly praising God and singing.
She was a proud member of Green Bay Chapter #227, OES since the 1950’s. She served for many years as Worthy Matron and for the last few years as a mentor and supporter of the young women who were carrying on the work of her chapter.
She was a stay home Mom until her baby was in middle school. At that time, she decided to get a job and to start driving. Her one and only full-time job was as a Dietary Aide at Lafayette Memorial Hospital. She started work there in the late 1960’s and worked until the hospital closed in 1989. After the hospital closed, she worked the polls during election time. She enjoyed seeing and talking to the people she had not seen in a while and them that she did not know.
She found fulfillment in her church ministry activities and in the mission work of the Lafayette Miller District Association. She was always ready to catch a ride anytime anywhere they were having an evening church service or “some singing”
She believed in education and all her children were REQUIRED to stay on the Honor Roll. B’s were accepted but A’s were expected. Anything less than an A got you a conversation that you would not like. In 1972, she fulfilled a dream and earned her own GED.
Her children called her Mother most of the time but often referred to her as “we Mama” or Ms. Emma. She was a strict mother who loved us enough to not let us be out in the world “acting like heathens”.
Those waiting to rejoice in Heaven with her are her mother, Alice “Ms Rennie” Braggs, her father, Willie Henry, her husband, Givens Jackson, Sr; her sons, Willie Henry, John Jackson, and Anthony Jackson; her daughter, Barbara Percy; her grandson, Ryan Jackson; her brothers Otho Woodfork, Booker T. McClellan, Charles Richard Henry, Ben Henry, Perry Henry, and Larry Henry; her sisters Romelia Wells, Varlia Williams, and Helen Daniels.
Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are: her children, Givens (Martha) Jackson, Jr, and Evelyn Trammell.
her grandchildren, Garry Henry, Kiffnea Talley. Kelvin Talley, Keidre Adams, Rico Jackson, Jennifer Jackson, Kandace Jackson, Justin Jackson. Chantale Wilson, Christina Scott, Cheryl Durrell, Pierce Jackson and James Jackson.
her daughters in love, Norma Henry, Elonda Jackson, Marie Gulley and Polly Reynolds.
her long-time friend and road trip buddy aka Thelma and Louise, Hazel West
along with 16 great grandchildren,13 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, tons of cousins and many friends.
